Diabetic Alert Dogs
Sean got diagnosed Jan 2012, at 11yrs old, with auto-immune Type 1 diabetes. He was an avid Rugby player and excellent honor roll student...
The complications that followed his diagnosis over the
next year had us looking into every support option
available as Sean was missing out on his "old life".
As blood sugar level is an important aspect in a diabetics daily life, for Sean, his level naturally settles on the lower end. And he drops often. So every day we realize how life threatening this disease really can be.
We've sought out support, and a friend helped us discover "D.A.D's." aka "Diabetic Alert Dogs". These dogs are imprinted as puppies with the scent of low blood sugar range, then trained as public access service dogs that can alert their diabetic to the dangerous changes in their owner's blood sugar levels.
We have been involved with organizations since early 2012, and Sean has been alerted by canines to both lows and highs blood sugar out-of-range numbers, right before our very eyes!
With a diabetic alert dog as a part of his support system, Sean can be made aware of his lows or highs before they get too extreme, before his meter even reads them, AND before they even happen! These dogs may even wake from their sleep to alert him.
